A Fresh Start in Pueblo: Packz4Kidz Backpacks Make an Impact at the State Fair

On July 26, 2025, against the festive backdrop of the Colorado State Fair, Kenzi’s Causes brought its Packz4Kidz program to Pueblo—one of the most exciting moments in our summer calendar. In just one day, we served 117 families, delivering backpacks filled with school supplies to 257 children from preschool through 12th grade. The setting was lively, the crowd diverse, and the impact deeply meaningful. Pueblo is a city with a strong sense of community heritage—but it also faces real challenges. The poverty rate in Pueblo stands at around 19.2%, notably higher than the national average, while nearly 15% of residents live below the federal poverty line World Population ReviewCensus Reporter. Child poverty looms even larger: nearly one in four children under 18 in Pueblo County grows up in poverty Wikipediacoloradokids.org. These numbers remind us that many families struggle just to afford the basics, let alone the cost of essential school materials. That’s where Packz4Kidz comes in. A backpack filled with fresh notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, folders, and more isn’t just gear—it’s a boost of dignity and confidence. Research shows that students who begin the school year properly equipped are more likely to stay engaged, do their homework, and feel part of the classroom community. It's a small gesture that yields big benefits: better attendance, improved self-esteem, and stronger academic motivation. At the Pueblo State Fair on July 26th, under bright summer skies, volunteers welcomed families with open hearts and full backpacks. Sponsors Ent Credit Union and Academy Kids Vision stepped forward to make this possible—providing critical funding and support. And with the Colorado State Fair generously providing space for the event, the atmosphere felt both festive and welcoming. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Ent Credit Union, Academy Kids Vision, and the Colorado State Fair. Your belief in our mission empowered us to bring vital resources directly into Pueblo neighborhoods. This event echoed our earlier outreach in Grand Junction, where we distributed 190 backpacks less than a week earlier, and it underscores a growing momentum: Packz4Kidz is gaining strength across Colorado, bringing tangible support to children who need it most. We believe no child should start school at a disadvantage. With every backpack handed out, we are shaping futures—one pencil, one ruler, one notebook at a time. Kenzi's Causes

In 2007, Jessica Bachus started Dolls for Daughters®, after her daughter Kenzi was stillborn. She created an annual holiday Toy Drive for Colorado children who would not otherwise have toys during the holidays. Today, Kenzi's Causes collects more than 100,000 toys, stocking stuffers, books, toothbrush/toothpaste kits, backpacks, lunch boxes and other items to change the lives of children in Colorado through our programs. At this annual event, families are also provided with community resources to help improve their lives and the lives of their children.
