ERIC STRANSKY—SEPTEMBER’S FEATURED DFD VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Some of our volunteers live a distance away from Denver. Jessica’s cousin, Eric Stransky, is one of those individuals. Although he lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming, he still finds a way to be involved with our annual Toy Shop. We are so grateful for his support as he spreads the word of our work to a whole new community!

1. How did you learn about Dolls for Daughters® and Kenzi’s Kidz?

Jessica Bachus is my cousin. 

2. Why did you decide to volunteer with Dolls for Daughters®? 

I wanted to do something fun and rewarding for those in need during Christmastime. I chose to volunteer here because I love the mission of DfD and the story of how it came to be what it is today. 

3. How long have you been a volunteer with Dolls for Daughters®? 

I have only volunteered once; for the Toy Shop last year. I plan on volunteering again this year for the Toy Shop as well. 

4. What is your most memorable experience volunteering with Dolls for Daughters® and which event was it at? 

It was a real-world reminder to appreciate everything we have. There are so many families out there who go without essential resources on a daily basis. They don’t have extra money to buy toys for Christmas. It feels pretty cool to be able to hand a child a free toy for Christmas who may not otherwise receive a gift. Also meeting Eric Reamer from the Experience Pros radio show was really neat. I’ve listened to them for a few years on the radio and had a great conversation with him. 

5. Have you participated in any fundraising event that Dolls for Daughters® had held?

No. I plan on participating more in the future (I’m still pursuing my Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree and will graduate in May 2014). 

6. Have you shared your volunteer experience with your friends and family? If so, what was their reaction? 

During last year’s Toy Shop, I volunteered with my mother, Lynda Stransky.  We both had a great time spending time with the other volunteers and those who make this great event come together every year.

7. If you did share your experience, have any of your friends or family become Dolls for Daughters® volunteers because of it?

I’ve shared my experience with some friends and co-workers. I don’t believe anyone has volunteered yet because we live in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Not many people have heard of the organization up here, but I’m spreading the word. 

8. With so many organizations in need of volunteers, what suggestions or advice do you have for people who consider volunteering, especially when it comes to choosing where to offer their help? 

Volunteer for an organization you believe in, which shares your personal values. My career is as an Emergency Room Registered Nurse, as well as a part-time EMT. I routinely encounter people on the worst day of their life. It’s my responsibility to do what I can do make it better. I feel the same way about volunteering for DfD. I felt great satisfaction after spending a day helping out the community.
