The Medina Family: Finding Community and Possibility with Kenzi’s Kidz

At Kenzi’s Causes, we understand that life’s challenges can sometimes leave families feeling isolated and overwhelmed. For families facing financial struggles, the inability to provide basic necessities or opportunities for their children can create feelings of loneliness and alienation. The Medina family—Pattie and her children Celina (17), Alex III (17), and Maria (12)—found solace and strength through Kenzi’s Kidz, discovering a community that feels like family. Raising a family on limited resources can be isolating, especially when everyday opportunities like museum visits or recreational activities seem out of reach. For Pattie, the support from Kenzi’s Causes filled a void that even her own family could not. “I have had a few major things happen in our family, and when I didn’t even feel comfortable speaking to my own family, I definitely felt comfortable and knew I could rely on Kenzi’s Causes for love and support during those times,” Pattie shared. “There was no judgment or negative response. I would have been lonely carrying the burden of these moments in my life. This sense of belonging and support has been a lifeline for the Medina family. Beyond financial relief, Kenzi’s Causes has provided the emotional backing they needed to weather life’s storms. Whether through personalized gestures like handmade birthday cards or events that bring families together, the program ensures that no family feels forgotten.   The Medina family’s journey with Kenzi’s Kidz has been transformative, not only because of the opportunities it has provided but also due to the mindset it has instilled. For Pattie and her husband, being part of the program has shifted how they approach their lives and parent their children. “As parents, it has given us an upgraded mindset to manage our lives and show our kids that change can happen at any age—that the possibilities are endless,” Pattie said. By demonstrating resilience and embracing opportunities, they have shown their children that challenges can be overcome and that growth is always within reach. This renewed perspective has inspired the Medina family to dream bigger. Whether visiting the zoo, attending church activities, or simply spending quality time together at a Colorado Rockies game, the program has enabled them to create meaningful experiences and instill values of hope and perseverance in their children. One of the most cherished aspects of Kenzi’s Kidz for the Medina family is the opportunity to connect with others. Annual events, like Breakfast with Santa, have become treasured traditions. “We get to see all the Kenzi’s Kidz families open gifts together,” Pattie shared. “We are a huge family thanks to Kenzi’s Causes bringing us together.” These events are more than moments of celebration—they are reminders of the strength and joy that come from community. Pattie noted, “We are never forgotten. They take the time to get to know us on a personal level.” As the New Year begins, the Medina family’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for transformation. Through Kenzi’s Kidz, they have found a supportive community and the tools and inspiration to embrace new beginnings.   Pattie summed up their journey beautifully: “The possibilities are endless.”

Kenzi's Causes

In 2007, Jessica Bachus started Dolls for Daughters®, after her daughter Kenzi was stillborn. She created an annual holiday Toy Drive for Colorado children who would not otherwise have toys during the holidays. Today, Kenzi's Causes collects more than 100,000 toys, stocking stuffers, books, toothbrush/toothpaste kits, backpacks, lunch boxes and other items to change the lives of children in Colorado through our programs. At this annual event, families are also provided with community resources to help improve their lives and the lives of their children.
