When the golden hues of October leaves begin to blanket the streets of Colorado, many families think of pumpkin patches and crisp autumn air. For some, it’s a month of reflection, a month of remembrance, and a month of love for the children they held in their dreams but never in their arms.
October marks Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and it is deeply personal for us at Kenzi’s Causes. Our foundation emerged from the heartache Jessica Bachus, our founder, experienced when she gave birth to her stillborn baby, Kenzi. It’s a grief that many parents know all too well, and it’s a grief that often goes unspoken in society. But Jessica turned her profound sorrow into purpose, ensuring that Kenzi’s light continues to shine bright by supporting under-resourced kids and families throughout Colorado.
Pregnancy and infant loss is an unfortunate reality for many families. Whether it’s an early miscarriage, a late-term loss, or the passing of an infant, the heartache remains incomparable. These parents grieve for a lifetime of memories they never got to make, first steps they’ll never see, and tender moments that will never be shared.
Yet, despite the frequency of these losses, they’re seldom discussed openly. Parents often grapple with their grief in silence, sometimes unsure of how to share or who to turn to. This October, we aim to break that silence.
By sharing our stories, we honor our angels and support one another. At Kenzi’s Causes, we’ve witnessed the transformative power of empathy and community, of one parent nodding in understanding as another share their struggles.
If you’re a parent who has experienced this unique grief, we want you to know you’re not alone. Your pain is valid, your loss is real, and your child, no matter how brief their time on Earth, has left an indelible mark on this world.
As part of our mission to preserve the memory of Kenzi and other young lives, we are providing a unique way to remember your loss. We have a downloadable PDF guide for those who'd like to make a candle in honor of their lost child. Each flicker of the flame can serve as a reminder of the bright light your baby brought into the world, even if it was for the briefest moment.
In the vast cosmos, stars may seem countless, but each one holds its unique brilliance. This October, let us remember our tiniest stars. Their light may have been brief, but it will forever illuminate our hearts.
